at this point i am 100% convinced that the conversation about queer representation in fiction is a shell game. people are confusing things that feel powerful with things that are powerful and as a result are focusing massive amounts of energy on tiny symbolic victories while the actual material battles are being waged in the dark and stolen from us en masse

A disney exec saying that the company supports gay rights through “inspiring content” while also funding homophobic legislation is like. an on the nose example and also the tip of the iceberg. we’ve reached the point where we recognize that target selling gay pride bath towels is hollow bullshit–the next step is realizing that Representation as a product is another form of rainbow capitalism that will never move the needle as much as people want it to. And also recognizing that, just because you personally have staked your identity on a particular fictional character, doesn’t mean that fictional character is actually meaningfully improving the world for people with your identity–the stakes might feel high, but they are actually astronomically low.
